Is Jesus God in Matthew, Mark and Luke?
by Street Theologian streettheologian.substack.com
The evidence for the deity of Christ is overwhelming. Jesus is called God with us (Mt. 1:23), is paralleled with God (Lk. 8:37-39), and promises to be omnipresent until the end of the age (Mt. 28:20). His words, like God’s, will not pass away (Lk. 21:33, Is. 40:8).
Jesus applies OT passages about YHWH to himself (Mt. 21:16, Ps. 8:2, Is. 8:13-15, Lk. 20:18). John the Baptist applies an Isaiah passage on YHWH to Jesus (Mk. 1:1-3, Is. 40:3).
Jesus forgives sins when only God can (Mk. 2:1-10) and is Lord of the God-ordained Sabbath (Mk. 2:27-28). Jesus redefines God's law (Mt. 5:21-28) and is the judge of all (Mt. 7:21-23) determining their eternal destiny.
Jesus receives worship (Mt. 2:11, Lk. 24:52), walks on water (Mk. 6:49-50; Job 9:8) when only God does in the OT, is Lord over nature stilling the storm like YHWH (Ps. 107; Mk. 4:39) and has power over Satan (Mk. 3:27-28).
Jesus is charged with blasphemy for calling himself the Son of Man (Mk. 14:60-64), who, in Daniel 7 has co-rulership with God, an eternal kingdom, comes in the clouds and is served by the nations having power and glory like God alone.
